What’s in a Domain Name?

Everyone is familiar with the .com or .net domain names that we see frequently on most website addresses. Since the early 2000s, .org has been a well-respected indication of a not-for-profit organization and .edu has indicated an institution of higher learning.

A recent article in conciergemedicinenews.com titled TECH. – Should doctors grab a .health domain, discusses the emergence of new domains in the healthcare field and the implications for medical professional websites.

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), is the company who oversees new domains, and will in the near future be selecting  a company both to market and sell the .health domains.  The private company who is awarded the marketing rights to .health will determine the type of organizations who purchase .health domains, which will ultimately define its validity in the healthcare space.

In addition to .health domains, there is discussion of other emerging domains in the future, such as .doctor, .medical or .surgery.
