In honor of National Nurses Week 2016, Specialdocs salutes the many nurses who tirelessly work to assist physicians across the country.
A bit of history about the observance: May 6, 1978, was declared the first Nurses Day by New Jersey Governor Brendon Byrne to recognize nurses in his state. Several attempts to establish a national observance for the profession were not successful until 1982 when the United States Congress and President Ronald Reagan established May 6 as “National Recognition Day for Nurses.” Expanding to a weeklong celebration, the American Nurses Association Board of Directors designated May 6-12 (May 12 is Florence Nightingale’s birthday) as “National Nurses Week” beginning in 1994 (NursingWorld.org).
Physicians, how are you honoring your valued nurses this week? Share your celebrations with us on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. We’d love to hear from you.
